Good day everyone. I am Fernelf aka Finduilas Ancalimon of the SHoA. I am fortunate to be able to bring you the first of hopefully many sessions of Portraits. Thingol was kind enough to allow me to interview him this week and the following is the result. So without much further ado, I bring you Portraits: an intimate look at the Elves of Imladris.
1) I want to thank you for allowing me the opportunity to spend some time with you and allowing all viewing a personal look at "The Elves of Imladris". Let’s start with a very basic question. If you could, please give me a brief background on Shane, Thingol, and Elestel. Tell us also how each part of you is integral to the Elves of Imladris.
It's my pleasure, Finduilas. I think "An intimate portrait of kinships" is a great idea, and am honored to be the first person interviewed. New members looking to join a kinship will have another excellent resource when making their decision.
A little about myself: I am 25, reside in Michigan, and enjoy outdoor activities. When it's not freezing cold here, I try to run at least 10 miles a week. I have lived in California (where I used to act), Colorado, and Africa for a few months. I love music and my tastes run from Brahms to Radiohead to Restoration (an EoI member's rock band).
I am not a hard-core gamer by any means, and so I think my perspective on kinships is a little different then some others. Though all of us can't wait for MEO, we discuss far more then just the game. We have built a community of mature, dedicated people interested in role playing, trivia, discussion of Tolkien and his works, the history of Arda and Imladris in particular, etc...
Thingol's background is familiar to everyone who has read the Silmarillion, while Elestel's (Star of Hope) background can be found at the information area with all the rest of our members stories. Basically, Elestel's father was lost in the battle of the Last Alliance while he was just a kid. As such, he feels acutely the pain inflicted by Sauron and is extremely motivated to help heal the hurts caused by him. Elestel then grew up in Imladris learning much from Elrond and others there. Grown to full powers of body and mind, and possessing a fiery spirit combined with a mastery of words; he has become a mighty lord and high protector of Imladris.

2) I really like the fact that the people of your kinship share many common interests including Tolkien. Take a look at your profile for a moment if you will:

You indicate you like "driving fast" ...I would take that to mean you like excitement...do you see yourself as a thrill seeker and if you agree or disagree how will that be reflected in Elestel? On the same line of thinking how much of you are in essence Elestel? Do you have similar qualities? ...and would Elestel like you if he were to meet you in person?
Well, I like "driving fast" both literally and figuratively. I have owned (Standard Federal Bank owned I should say) an 89 and a 99 Corvette which I worked on and modified myself. I have been over 150 mph in the '99 a few times. I guess I am a bit of a thrill seeker and enjoy the adrenaline rush; and how your perception of time changes at those speeds.
One of my favorite quotes is by Theodore Roosevelt: "The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, who strives valiantly; who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions, and spends himself in a worthy cause; who, at best, knows the triumph of high achievement; and who, at worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat."
I suspect as Elestel some of that same attitude will shine through. Though our base is Imladris, I'm sure during quests and journeys to aid our allies we will take some calculated risks. So yes, there will be some similarities between Elestel and I (how could there not?).
I think Elestel and I would get along quite well if we were to meet. I happen to shoot a bow pretty well in real life, so he might try to put me to work scouting our borders.
3) You also indicate you are an "aspiring writer". Since we will be creating our adventures as we journey into Middle Earth... do you see your talent for writing as an advantage to the rest of your Kinship?
Well, by myself, the fact that I am a good writer (if I am) does not mean much. More importantly, is the fact that we have several members who enjoy writing and/or are very imaginative and creative. We all play off one another and add our own piece of the story. It's amazing sometimes in our role-plays or on our boards to see a story or idea take an unexpected turn which keeps people entertained and interested. So the leader cannot do it alone, but it is important for the leader to have new ideas and be able to focus an idea so that it can come to fruition.
