Cool is the rain that falls from dark sky
Wind howls in the night, never an end
Eyes watch the distance, none yet know why
All stand on the wall, wait to defend
Shadows creeping bring uncertain doom
Fell beast approach hunting their prey
Howls break the silence under the moon
No hope is coming with break of day
Shouts and curses and feelings of dread
Steel and bow and shield all brought to bear
What hope now but to follow the dead
All hope is lost, all fall to despair
Battle begun and evil runs wild
Those of every race, all shall stand true
Those in their prime, old age and the child
Daring to hope to see the night through
Desperate the hordes, they never retreat
Regroup and attack and ever go on
Dark majicks afoot, brought by deceit
Naught to do but wait for light of dawn
Gates lay broken, defeat must be near
King and his men, forth they will ride
Horn has sounded, bringing on fear
Enemies cower, nowhere to hide
White is the gleam, seen from afar
Wizard appears upon yonder hill
Soldiers unlooked for, now do they charge
For a single moment, all is still
Retreat for evil, oh how they flee
Run from the blade to find even more
Straight to their death, they find in the trees
Never quite knowing what was in store
Victory at last, through the long night
Well beyond count climbs number of dead
Forest now stands still, silent its might
Upon fields trod bare and washed in red
Graves for the fallen, now they must toil
Grass soon shall grow to stay always pure
Across from the mound, poison in soil
Forever blackened, never to cure
Onward they must ride, but for brief rest
Seeking worse danger, they must go on
For they have passed but the first test
One step at a time, darkness to dawn

The inspiration for this poem, in case you haven't guessed, is the battle at Helm's Deep. I purposely left out proper names and things like that because I felt it would take away and that most people who would enjoy reading this would be familiar with the LotR story thus names and such didn't need to be mentioned. I hope you all enjoy reading it as much as I did writing it, which was early this morning at work.
